Groundswell Community Mural Project is a Brooklyn-based, 501(c)(3) founded in 1996. Groundswell brings together professional artists, grassroots organizations and communities in partnership to create high quality murals in under-represented neighborhoods. Our work inspires youth, communities and artists to take active ownership of their future and equips them with the tools necessary for social change. We work city wide with a special focus on Brooklyn.

We're a bunch of anonymous females who take the names of dead women artists as pseudonyms and appear in public wearing gorilla masks. We have produced posters, stickers, books, printed projects, and actions that expose sexism and racism in politics, the art world, film and the culture at large. We use humor to convey information, provoke discussion, and show that feminists can be funny. We wear gorilla masks to focus on the issues rather than our personalities.

Habeas Lounge

The Habeas Lounge is a space for civic dialogue where project staff, and volunteers work together to curate a series of public discussions and exchanges on critical civic and democracy-related topics. The Lounge uses the built environment to provide a publicly available space that promotes dialogue. Artists design a space aimed at breaking away from the typical dynamics of the panel discussion. The space is laid out using special materials, backdrops, and arrangements so as to create a more fluid and inclusive atmosphere where candid civic exchange is encouraged and promoted.
