Shana R. Goetsch

Shana R. Goetsch's art frequently involves themes of social justice, empowerment, love, loss and bereavement; she began painting in 1989 after witnessing the murder of her mother. Often using words, cultural references or found objects, she injects personal voice, history and memory into her pieces. Goetsch's work has appeared in numerous exhibitions throughout Wisconsin, Virginia, Maryland, Arizona, New York, Washington D.C. and British Columbia, Canada. She received her MFA and MA in Community Arts from the Maryland Institute College of Art, and her BFA in Painting, with a minor in Printmaking from the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design.

Goetsch is a professional artist and educator in the Baltimore, Maryland area. She is currently Adjunct Faculty at Howard Community College, teaching Three Dimensional Art & Design and Sculpture I courses, and co-teaching the Humanities course, Women, Art and Culture. As a community artist, she has worked with a variety of neighborhoods, schools and non-profit art centers within Baltimore City, including: City Arts, Better Waverly's 901 Arts, Jubilee Arts, Baltimore City Public Schools, and The Creative Alliance.

Originally from Milwaukee, Goetsch joined the Riverwest Artists' Association board of directors for several years, working within their programming and gallery committees. She has also served as a DV advocate for two domestic violence centers; Sojourner Family Peace Center in Milwaukee - in conjunction with the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office - and The House Of Ruth Maryland, where she completed a year-long, community artist residency through AmeriCorps. Currently, Shana is the Regional Coordinator of The Feminist Art Project - Baltimore, where she continues to recognize art as a key vehicle for awareness, empowerment and efficacy.
