Artist Statement: 

My art crosses boundaries from installations and performance arts to documentary to poetry. My work responds to issues of human rights, police brutality, embodiment (art healing), health disparities, biomedicine, medical deportation, climate change and the immigration detention deportation apparatus. My interest on the arts allow mw to expand the dialogue and awareness about social transformation, climate and racial justice and meditations about identity., gender... I earned my MFA in studio art from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, an MA in Sociology from UCLA, and a BA in Political Science from the University of Puerto Rico. Further, my training in sociology and the arts provide me with artistic traditions, sociological perspectives (feminism, health disparities) to contextualize my experience of breast cancer.  For more details, click the link https://www.arts.gov/50th/stories/sonia-baez-hernandez 

My documentary Territories of the Breast reveals the stories of five women. My artworks have been used to educate and bring awareness about different topics in universities and in community based projects (in Santo Domingo, DR, Pilsen, Chicago, Lexington, KY, Miami, FL).

I have published poems and articles. My most recent publications include an article in the edited volume, “Territories of the Breast: A Woman’s Cancer Journey, A Call for Human Rights” in Creative Arts in Research for Community and Cultural Change (2011), a co-edited book, Ir y venir: Procesos transnacionales entre América Latina y el norte, (2007), and an article in a peer reviewed academic journal “Breast Cancer: A New Aesthetic of the Subject” in Feminist Formations (formerly The National Women’s Studies Association Journal, 2009).
