Jules Rochielle

Artist Statement: 

Jules Rochielle is a socially and politically engaged artist interested in innovative public practices and collaborations. She has held artist residencies at LACE (Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions),Knowles West Media Center, Bristol UK and with The Sequoia Parks Foundation, Visalia, CA.

She was recently selected to participate in an aspect of Living as Form. Living as Form is an unprecedented project that explores over 20 years of cultural works that blur the forms of art and everyday life, and emphasize participation, dialogue, community engagement, and activism around social issues. Living as Form provides a historical look at these socially engaged alternative practices, and the role artists have played in reshaping our world. Presented by New York City-based public art presenter Creative Time.

She has presented her work as a part of “Public Interest: Projects & Prototypes” hosted by Otis College of Art and Design and LACE (2010), and “Demonstrating Change through Storytelling” at Round House Community Center, Vancouver, BC (2007).

Her articles on engaged artistic practice have been published by the Grunt Gallery in Vancouver, BC (2008) and in, 2009 Volume 7 and 2008 Volume 28 of the Otis College of Art and Design Magazine. She has exhibited with LACE (Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions) (2011), Casa Del Tunel, Tijuana, Mexico (2010), Pete & Susan Barrett Art Gallery, Santa Monica College, Santa Monica, Ca. (2009), Track 16 Gallery, Bergamot Station, Santa Monica, CA (2009) and with Transforma /Otis NOLA Collaboration, New Orleans, Louisiana (2008). She is also a consultant that specializes in community arts, community organizing and non-profit sector issues. She has worked with the following groups and organizations: Metabolic Studio / Farmlab, Otis College of Art and Design, Freewaves New Media Festival, Access to Media Education Society, Vancouver Moving Theatre/Heart of the City Festival, Full Circle First Nations Performance/Talking Stick Festival, Miscellaneous Productions and the Vancouver International Fringe Festival/ First Vancouver Theatre Space Society.
